Singapore is an interesting urban sprawl by water - a concrete playground of older buildings, newer buildings and wall to wall retail. East meets West and it largely works, depending on what you expect from a destination.

The city is very close to the airport, and even if you only have three or four hours you can dip your toe into the vast retail landscape of the Orchard Road.

As an introduction to South East Asia it will do, although you don't have to travel very far afield to discover a very different landscape.

This website offers a good introduction to the city.
